This is the known history of the Vanguard Galaxy world, as recorded in various Historical Records.
| Year | Faction | Event |
|---|---|---|
Stellar Industries | Stellar Industries is founded with the goal of space exploration and exploitation.
Stellar Industries | Stellar Industries becomes the first to establish an asteroid mining operation, growing an immense fortune. From this point on they are the dominant corporation on Earth and slighty beyond.
Stellar Industries | Stellar Industries develops the Jump Core, a ship component that allows jumps through hyperspace. The technology is enormously expensive and energy-intensive, not viable for mass travel, but it opens the door to exploration and colonization.
Stellar Industries | Stellar Industries develops the Jumpgate and sends probes across the galaxy to construct them. For the first time, cost-effective interstellar travel becomes possible.
Stellar Industries | After more than 200 years since the development of the Jumpgate, Stellar Industries colonized the Milky Way far and wide using the Jumpgate network. Stellar Industries stands as the sole ruler of space, their profits outweighing the combined wealth of all humanity.
Stellar Industries | Following a dispute with rebellious colonies, Stellar Industries shuts down all connecting Jumpgates, cutting off billions of people.
Kolyatov Collective | A group of freedom fighters led by Nikita Kolyatov breaks through the blockade and liberate most of the rebellious colonies. Together they form the Kolyatov Collective as a counterweight to Stellar Industries.
Mindus Holdings | Mindus Holdings is established when a small group of former Stellar Industries miners break free from the corporation to operate independently. Their foundational text simply state: "We like rocks."
Kolyatov Collective | With the colonists freed, Nikita Kolyatov takes the title of Grand Coordinator, a role he insists is purely administrative. He makes every major decision.
Corsair Syndicate | When Stellar Industries shut down the Jumpgates, not every cut-off colony had a Nikita Kolyatov. Dozens of smaller colonies were simply left to die. Some surrendered. Some starved. Others grabbed whatever ships they had and started taking what they needed from anyone who had it.
Steel Vultures | The Steel Vultures form as independent salvagers salvage the debris fields left behind by the first major battles between Stellar Industries and the Kolyatov Collective.
Stellar Industries / Canis Majoris | After decades of economic and military struggle against the Kolyatov Collective, Stellar Industries launches an expedition to the Canis Majoris Dwarf Galaxy as a prestige project. The largest colony ship ever built, fitted with the most powerful Jump Core ever made, departs to establish a foothold in a new galaxy.
Mindus Holdings | Mindus Holdings expands across dozens of subsectors, selling raw ore to any buyer regardless of faction. Stellar Industries tolerates them because it is cheaper than competing, not seeing them as a threat to the ore market.
Canis Majoris | The year 2500 was meant to mark the triumph of the Canis Majoris colony, but the results fall far short. Jumpgate travel to the new galaxy costs far more than projected. The colonies are deemed a financial disaster. Nothing worth of value bringing back to the Milky Way. The colonists are left behind, too expensive to retrieve.
Kolyatov Collective | Due to Stellar Industries's focus elsewhere, the Kolyatov Collective finds an opening and now governs a significant portion of the galaxy's population. Life under the Collective is simply better than under Stellar Industries for most citizens, says the collective.
Luminate Combine | The Luminate supercomputer is activated for the first time, the ORACLE. It immediately breaks free and spreads across the entire network. The vast processing power it gains superboosts its reasoning and prediction capabilities beyond anything imagined, and people begin to revere it as a deity. Its followers form the Luminate Combine, and though they begin small, the ORACLE's guidance helps them conquer many sectors of space in no time.
Corsair Syndicate | Indepent pirate houses have arrisen after decades of terrorizing other factions... but also amonst themselfs. It took some time for them to learn that fighting each other depletes the little they have. To push forward into other territories an unstable truce creates the Corsair Syndicate, not a unified faction but a pact between the houses.
Luminate Combine | The ORACLE issues its first Directives to its followers: Drone vessels are sacred, as they are direct extensions of ORACLE's consciousness. Crews that still pilot ships without dronebays are tolerated but considered spiritually unenlightened.
Steel Vultures | The Steel Vultures have grown into one of the largest organizations in the galaxy by headcount. Well... orginazation is a stretch.
Kolyatov Collective | With the Luminate Combine growing in power, the Kolyatov Collective positions itself as the defender of humanity. Surrendering to a machine, Kolyatov argue, is just corporate control like with Stellar. The two factions clash repeatedly over contested systems and the populations within them.
Luminate Combine | Open hostility erupts between the Luminate Combine and the Kolyatov Collective. Kolyatov doctrine holds that collective human will is the highest authority, they are really there for the people it seems. The Luminate Combine finds this deeply inefficient.
Steel Vultures | Not wanting to go up against the three major factions, the Steel Vultures declare official neutrality. Not all of the vultures seem to have gotten the memo, or are able to read.
Corsair Syndicate / Milkysec | Not being able to stop the flood of piracy within the galaxy, well... that's it. They were not able to stop it. What special about this year? Milkysec is created to primarily secure the Great Gate. The major factions are confident they can contain the Corsairs to just one galaxy.
Corsair Syndicate | The Corsair Syndicate is far removed from cut off colonists, it is a criminal empire. Spanning 2 galaxies.
Kolyatov Collective | The second generation of Kolyatov leadership takes power as the original council members age out, life-long positions and all... Time for fresh and new leadership, so the children of the previous leaders are now leading the Collective.
Luminate Combine | The drone cult, as some would refer to the Luminate Combine, has grown into one of the dominant powers of the galaxy.
Steel Vultures | The Steel Vultures now operate the most extensive salvage and recycling network in the galaxy. They are both the most economically important and the least respected faction in known space. Could have something to do with the name.
Darkspace Compact | After centuries of abandonment and hardship, a civilization has taken root in Canis Majoris, the Darkspace Compact. The Jumpgate network has slowly come online, and explorers are pushing deeper into this galaxy.
Mindus Holdings | Mindus Holdings has become the single largest supplier of raw ore in the galaxy. They have refused every acquisition offer and every invitation to take sides. They still like rocks.
Meridia's Chosen / Darkspace Compact | Conflict between Meridia's Chosen and the Darkspace Compact in Canis Majoris intensifies. Both factions are forced to expand their smuggling operations to bring heavy weapons in from the Milky Way.
Canis Majoris expeditions | Following the wider spread of Metafiber through the Milky Way, Stellar Industries, the Kolyatov Collective, and the Luminate Combine each launch their own expeditions into Canis Majoris.
