Skill Points Available

Skills are one of core mechanics of Vanguard Galaxy. Player receives skill points by levelling (1 level = 1 skill point), doing quests (which can grant 1 skill point), or by finding/looting/purchasing special bonus skill point consumable items.

Bonus Skill Point Consumable

Maximum amount of skill points is limited by the area reached and/or main story mission status.

  • Prologue: Maximum level 10, skill Point Cap 20
  • Frontier: Maximum level 30, skill Point Cap 60
  • Conquest: Maximum level 60, skill Point Cap 120

Skill Trees

Trade Skill tree

Player starts with only a single skill tree unlocked. Over time, they gain the ability to unlock every present skill tree.

There are 8 currently available skill trees:

  • Mining: Relates to Mining
  • Drones: Relates to Drones
  • Autopilot: Relates to ECHO
  • Industrial: Relates to Refinery and Forge usage
  • Salvaging: Relates to Salvage
  • Economy: Relates to Trade
  • Combat: Relates to Combat
  • Defence: Relates to any activity performed in hazardous environment

Starting options in prologue are Mining, Salvage or Combat.

Redistribution

Skill Point Redistribution

Skill points are a re-distributable commodity. This means any skill point usage is not permanent - player is incentivized to redistribute available points as needed for tasks they intend to perform.

Ie. If the player decided to do Mining for an extensive period of time, they are free to refund the entire skill point allocation and reinvest in mining (and optionally Drones, Industry, Autopilot, and/or Combat/Defence skill trees).

Skill Loadouts

Skill loadouts are introduced to help manage various skill redistribution schemes. They are global but can be assigned on a per-ship basis. Thus, having 4 ships, can mean the player uses 4 skill loadouts, one per ship (eg. One mining, one salvaging, one combat, and one trade/industry/crafting). When swapping ships, loadouts are swapped as well.

There is no limit to the number of loadouts player has access to - so the player is free to form either global loadouts, or even ship-specific loadouts.

Example of player loadouts, all of which can be used on an as-needed basis:

Currently assigned loadout to a ship can be seen within the Personal Hangar by clicking on the S button, top-right.

Bonus Skill Points

Aside for skill points gained through levelling and quests, bonus skill points can be found at the following locations:

  • Motherlode systems: Reaching the Motherlode station in any subsector allows for purchase of a single point. See Navigation.
  • Graveyard systems: Reaching the Graveyard station in any subsector allows for purchase of a single point.
  • Dread Ports: Destroying any Corsair Syndicate base for the first time rewards with a single point.
  • War Zones: Destroying the enemy base for the first time rewards with a single point.
  • Headquarters Station: Reaching every headquarters (in Conquest Zone allows for purchase of a skill point.
  • Opening Locked Containers: Containers can contain a skill point at random.

After reaching the present cap, bonus skill points cannot be used but can be stored in the armory indefinitely (while waiting for the game expansions).
